Deaf Hub Exploring Perspectives (DHEP) Series: Biomedical Science features Jessica Contreras, MS and her presentation, “Deaf Latine in Academia: NTID, Research, & You” on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 from 4 to 5 p.m. at Student Development Center 1310.
Hailed from Denver, Colorado, Jessica Contreras, a Deaf Latine, serves as an Assistant Research Professor at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) and works at the NTID Research Center on Culture & Language (CCL), led by Dr. Peter C. Hauser. In addition to her work, she is currently in her second year as a doctoral (PhD) student at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) studying Educational Leadership, Research, & Policy. Contreras' past work includes studying the cognitive development of deaf individuals and contributing to improving guidance on COVID-19 management and healthcare navigation accessible to the Deaf community. Their current research is centered on supporting students with disabilities and minorities, helping them achieve success in higher education. Through research, Contreras aims to make a significant impact, foster inclusivity and understanding, and advocate for underserved populations in higher education.
DHEP: Biomedical Science is a series spotlighting various scientists with hearing loss to share their perspectives of their challenges while navigating through their academic career.
