"Deaf Republic" Book Discussion at Rush Public Library

This month, in conjunction with Big Read: NTID, Rush Public Library will be reading the NEA Big Read selection, Deaf Republic by Ukrainian-American poet, Ilya Kaminsky. This novel opens in an occupied country in a time of political unrest. When soldiers breaking up a protest kill a deaf boy, Petya, the gunshot becomes the last thing the citizens hear―they all have gone deaf, and their dissent becomes coordinated by sign language. At once a love story, an elegy, and an urgent plea, Deaf Republic confronts our time’s vicious atrocities and our collective silence in the face of them. Join the Rush Readers' Book Club on Thursday, March 23, or Thursday, March 30 from 7 -9 p.m. for discussion and dessert; advance registration is required.

A sign language interpreter request should be made in advance. The sooner the request is made, the more likely we will be able to accommodate the request. Please reach out to the Event Coordinator, Sue Writz, by email (sue.writz@libraryweb.org) with the date for which you have registered and she will arrange the interpreter.
