The Evolution and Function of Self-deception
College of Science Distinguished speaker Robert Trivers, Rutgers University.Self-deception evolved in the service of deceit, the better to hide it from others. The neurophysiology social psychology and immunology of self-deception are all organized toward this purpose. Many human disasters_from airplane crashes to stupid and misguided wars_are partly or largely the result of self-deception. We can fight our own self-deception but it is not easy.
