RIT’s Furniture Design program is proud to welcome Nash Visiting Artist Michael Puryear, a nationally recognized designer, furniture maker, and educator. His work has been exhibited at The Museum of Art and Design, The Mint Museum, the Peabody Essex, and The Smithsonian’s Museum of African American History and Culture. He lives closely with nature and is constantly exploring new techniques and sharing his passion with his students. He has taught extensively at many of the craft schools in the United States including Penland where he started teaching in 1995, as well as Parsons School of Design and was an adjunct associate professor at the State University of New York at Purchase for 13 years. He seeks to create subtle, simple, and elegant pieces of furniture that consider the problem the piece is solving and how the human body interacts with it. Puryear is the 2023 recipient of the Furniture Society Award of Distinction for his achievement in the studio and furniture arts.
