GIS/Public Policy Seminar: Watershed Moment, Evelyn Brister

Watershed Moment, Evelyn Brister

The American West has long been viewed as a place of rugged landscapes and endless opportunities. The land, however, cannot support the growing demands of residents, agriculture, industry, and tourism without changes in policies, systems, and expectations. For instance, real estate and tourism industries play a larger role than in the past: they buffer boom-and-bust cycles but also exacerbate income inequality. What’s more, urban growth and outdoor recreation place severe pressure on wildlife habitat and migration routes. These themes are the subject of A Watershed Moment: The American West in the Age of Limits (University of Utah Press, 2024). An editor of the volume will discuss the innovative tools and collaborative approaches that communities are using to address new forms of land use problems.

Evelyn Brister is Professor of Philosophy at RIT and a faculty affiliate in Public Policy and Environmental Science. She is an editor of A Watershed Moment: The American West in the Age of Limits (University of Utah Press, 2024). Her research examines ethical and political issues in land management and conservation science.
