Glass Lamp Installation

This exhibition showcases 12 unique lamp designs created during the Vignelli Center for Design Studies' 2023 Summer Workshop. Students and designers from the global art community participated in a week-long workshop divided between the Vignelli Center for Design Studies at RIT and the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, N.Y.

Inspired by the Vignelli Archives, participants developed a project of their own design that they explored under the supervision of Vignelli Center staff and through the facilitation of master craft glass blowers from the Corning Museum of Glass.

Vignelli Center Director Josh Owen designed a custom lamp base for the workshop in order to set some unifying parameters for the body of work to be produced. “Vignelli Red” was selected as the color for these bases in order to create a link to the Vignelli ethos and to offer ‘consistency in advance’ to the experimental grouping. Additionally, the famous Unipolar Slider Switch designed by Achille Castiglioni was selected to be a part of the lamp assembly to pay homage to the connection between the two designers.
