Glass Visiting Artist: Jane Cook
RIT's glass program is hosting Dr. Jane Cook online for an online lecture as part of its 2022 Visiting Artist Lecture Series at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18.
She will deliver a talk about her work and a career at the intersection of glass art and glass science. Her visit will also include a group discussion at 12:30 p.m. regarding the theme of FAILURE as it lives in both material and process. These events are open to all at RIT.
Known to wear many hats within the contemporary glass field, Cook is known internationally as an artist, scientist, engineer, and educator. Formerly, Jane was chief scientist at The Corning Museum of Glass, the museum’s principal resource to artists, curators, scholars, and visitors on the science and technology of glass. She is known for her ability to explain the science of glass in highly effective ways to the non-scientist and is especially driven to help inform artists how scientific and engineering fundamentals can inform their work.
Cook earned a Ph.D. in metallurgical engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and is a materials engineer with over 25 years of expertise in glass, metals, ceramics, and semiconductors. She worked at Corning Incorporated R&D for 16 years and is inventor on over 30 patent applications.
