How to Say No (Without Sacrificing Opportunities)

Abstract:
If you find yourself exhausted and over-scheduled, you’re not alone. Over half of faculty, staff, and administrators in higher education report experiencing burnout, and the effect is especially damaging to women, gender minorities, and people of color–in part because these groups are disproportionately likely to end up with extra service, administrative work, and other tasks that don’t directly contribute to career goals.
In this 2-hour workshop, we’ll define and discuss non-promotable tasks, examine our own workloads, and practice prioritizing our work portfolio to align with our goals and interests and to leave more time for our primary work. Then we’ll practice the conversations that enable us to say no without harming work relationships or closing the door on future opportunities.
This workshop is open to all employees in the College of Science. We will provide a light lunch, though participants are encouraged to bring a water bottle. Participants will also be eligible to win a copy of the book, "The No Club: Putting a Stop to Women's Dead-End Work", the primary source for this workshop’s materials.
