Abstract
:

Diffraction gratings are niche optical elements, used in a small number of optical systems; for this reason they are not nearly as familiar as lenses and mirrors, even to most specialists in optics. In this talk we will examine what gratings are, how they work and what uses they have, and we will explore the various classes of grating-based optical systems. We’ll conclude with a number of examples in which gratings have played a crucial role in discoveries that have advanced the frontiers of science.

Speaker Bio:
Christopher Palmer is Senior Director and General Manager of the Optical Components Business of Newport Corporation, part of MKS Instruments, Inc, managing its diffraction gratings business (Richardson Gratings) in Rochester, New York and its thin film filters and replicated mirrors business in Franklin, Massachusetts. He has worked with Richardson Gratings since 1985, and served as its general manager since 1993. Chris received a BS degree in physics from St John Fisher College and MA and PhD degrees in physics from Bryn Mawr College. He has co-authored a number of technical articles on diffraction gratings as well as the Diffraction Grating Handbook.

Intended Audience:
Beginners, undergraduates, graduates. Those with interest in the topic.
