Abstract
:

Optics classwork and research tend to focus on designing solutions to be used in a controlled setting – in the lab, or a clean factory, or built into a larger system to protect the environment around the optics. But the information that can be collected with light is useful in many messier contexts, such as on the farm. In this talk, I will discuss the many challenges we had to overcome to deploy sensitive imaging systems in-line on dairy farms including environmental resistance, internal cleaning, and system integration, as well as what it is like to work in the farm environment as a newcomer to the agricultural world. I will give an overview of typical applications of optical systems and compare them to our application for on-farm milk testing. Additionally, I will discuss the challenges of isolating the signal of the desired milk components.

Speaker Bio:
Zachary Sobel-Pressman is an Optical Engineer at Labby. His work primarily consists of designing optical systems for use in milk quality and animal health testing for the dairy industry. He enjoys operating at the intersection of optics and biology, where he can tackle multidisciplinary problems with real-world impact. Prior to Labby he worked at Clerio Vision, where he was part of the team creating the next-generation femtosecond laser system. This system is used in Laser Induced Refractive Index Change (LIRIC) procedures to precisely correct vision in patients who recently underwent cataracts surgery. Zach received his BS in Optical Engineering from the University of Rochester’s Institute of Optics.
