This seminar will review the importance of developing science identity for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students as well as how science identity contributes to building a sense of belonging in STEM fields.

Abstract
:

Greeting Tigers! Scott Cohen, a proud RIT alumnus, will talk about science identity with deaf students and how it contributes to building a sense of belonging in STEM fields. He is a former science teacher at Atlanta Area School for the Deaf and a Dean’s Research Fellow for the College of Education and Human Development at Georgia State University working on his Ph.D. in science education. His research focuses on teachers’ professional knowledge and skill in teaching science to deaf students, and on improving science teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge for facilitating authentic science learning experiences with deaf students. He has presented his research at state, national, and international conferences for science teaching focusing on topics concerning deaf students, including scientific-ASL discourse complexities and the development of science identity with deaf students. His talk will also discuss his personal science identity trajectory and the implications from his experiences for deaf students entering STEM fields.
