Maya Lončar is an award-winning Croatian-American guitarist and teacher with a passion for performing while carrying energy that commands attention on any stage. She began her studies at the age of six with her father and has since then been invited as a guest artist for multiple concerts and festivals throughout Europe and America such as the Bihac Summer Guitar Workshop in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Karlovac International Summer Guitar School in Croatia, the Classical Guitar Society of Upstate New York, and the online series Women of Guitar. In addition to her solo career, she is also an experienced chamber musician, previously touring with her trio, Triple Tango, and now performing in a double bass and guitar duo with her partner, Robert Catinella.
She has performed as a guitarist and a violinist in a multitude of prestigious venues including the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Music Center at Strathmore, the National Institute of Health, and the Croatian Embassy. Under her belt are also a variety of top prizes and awards from competitions like the Appalachian State Guitar Festival Competition, the Charlottesville Guitar Festival Competition, and the Southern Guitar Festival Competition. In February of 2020, she was runner-up for the Eastman Concerto Competition where she performed Heitor Villa-Lobos’s Concerto for Guitar. She has also had the pleasure of working closely with some of the world's most legendary guitarists such as David Russell, Pepe Romero, Xufei Yang, and Berta Rojas.
Most recently, Maya completed her Master of Music at the Eastman School of Music with Nicholas Goluses in Rochester, NY where she was awarded the Performance Certificate in recognition for demonstrating outstanding performance ability. Maya was featured on the radio with Rochester's WXXI - Classical 91.5 where she performed in a program with other fellow winners of the Performance Certificate at the Hochstein School of Music.
Now, Maya is an active teacher and advocate of music in her community of Loudoun County, VA. She teaches guitar and orchestra at Riverside High School in Leesburg, VA, and is a board member of Aguado Guitar Concerts, a charity organization dedicated to enriching the Loudoun community through classical guitar performances and educational events. She is also pursuing her Doctor of Music Arts in Performance and Literature at the Eastman School of Music where she maintains her graduate assistantship to teach guitar lessons to students at the University of Rochester. Her past teachers include Julian Gray at the Shenandoah Conservatory, and her father, Miroslav Lončar.
