Physics Colloquium
Photophysics of Colloidal Nanocrystals in the Strong Light-Matter Coupling Limit

Dr. Todd Krauss

Professor, Dept. of Chemistry
University of Rochester

Event Details: Coupling the electronic states of nanoparticles to the quantized radiation field inside an optical cavity creates a set of new photon-matter hybrid excitations, called polaritons. This quantum superposition of matter and light has recently gained significant interest due to the realization that these hybridized states b can potentially lead to groundbreaking new discoveries in such disparate fields as synthetic chemistry and quantum computing. Here we will focus on the formation of CdSe nanoplatelet exciton-polaritons in dielectric Fabry-Pérot microcavities. Nanoplatelet-cavity hybrid systems are easily brought into the strong coupling regime at room temperature, and their unique polariton photophysics has been characterized using angle resolved reflectance, transmission, and photoluminescence measurements. Mixed quantum-classical dynamics simulations of the angle-resolved photophysics agree extremely well with the experimental data, providing a fundamental explanation of the upper and lower polariton population dynamics

Bio: Todd Krauss is a Professor of Chemistry, Optics, and the Jay Last Professor in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering at the University of Rochester. Krauss's research interests involve fundamental physical, optical and chemical studies of colloidal semiconductor materials at the nanometer scale, down to the single molecule level. Currently, his investigations are focused on the photophysical characterization of doped semiconductor nanocrystals, and the application of colloidal nanocrystals to solving important challenges in energy, photo-catalysis, quantum optics, and biomedicine.
