Physics Colloquium -- Quantum Photonic Technologies from Big to Small
Quantum Photonic Technologies from Big to SmallDr. Gregory HowlandAssistant ProfessorSchool of Physics and Astronomy, RITAbstract:Quantum Photonic Technologies exploit peculiar quantum quantum-mechanical properties of single photons---elemental particles of light---to realize transformative applications. They can provide unbreakably secure communication channels, cameras that see in the dark and around corners, perfect random number generation, GPS-free navigation, simulation of complex molecules, and more! I will give a high-level overview of the landscape of quantum-information-based technologies and the nascent quantum industry, including the new National Quantum Initiative. Then, I will describe some of my own research efforts on quantum-optical systems, from characterizing real-world quantum resources in "bulk" optics to fabricating "chip-scale" integrated photonic circuits.
