The Psychology of Sexual Violence with NOWCAN at RIT x Psi Chi x Psych Club
This is event #5 in our Women's History Event Series cohosted by NOWCAN at RIT, Psi Chi International Psychology Honor Society, and RIT's Psych Club with guest speaker Dr. Maggie Manges!
Sexual violence is a pervasive public health and human rights issue that affects people across identities, communities, and life stages. This presentation introduces attendees to the psychological foundations of sexual violence, including its prevalence, risk factors, trauma impacts, and evidence-based approaches to prevention and survivor support. Through a mix of research-driven content and guided interactive activities, students will examine common myths, explore the role of social norms, and consider how psychological science can inform compassionate, ethical responses. The session emphasizes empowerment through knowledge, critical thinking, and awareness, and encourages attendees to reflect on how they can contribute to safer, more supportive environments.
An advocate from RESTORE Sexual Assault Services will be present to provide support and resources, given discussions of sensitive topics.
