New Energy New York (NENY) is a comprehensive ecosystem of project initiatives that support the establishment of an American hub for battery innovation, manufacturing, and workforce development in upstate New York — all made possible by a coalition of academia, non-profit, government and industry partners.

The RIT Battery Development Center presents the Li-ion Battery Manufacturing Optimization Seminar, collaborating with TA Instruments | Waters, a global leader in thermal analysis, rheology, and microcalorimetry solutions critical to advancing and optimizing battery production. This 2.5-day event held April 13–15, offers a deep, technical exploration of the lithium-ion cell manufacturing process with a clear focus on optimization at every stage. Participants will gain in-depth, practical understanding of the materials, processes, and equipment required to achieve high-performance, reliable, and scalable battery production in both current and emerging technologies.

The seminar begins with an optional half-day program on April 13, featuring guided tours of the Kodak Development and Production Coater and the RIT BDC Testing facility. The main sessions, running full days on April 14 and 15, deliver a deep dive into critical manufacturing steps, including advanced lithium-ion materials and electrode design, precision coating technology, slurry rheology and mixing optimization, cell assembly techniques, quality control methods, thermal analysis, microcalorimetry, and emerging solid-state and next-generation battery concepts. Hands-on activities form a central component, allowing participants to actively engage in slurry preparation, electrode fabrication, pouch and cylindrical cell assembly, and rheology demonstrations under expert guidance.

Throughout the event, emphasis is placed on translating theoretical knowledge into actionable improvements in manufacturing efficiency, electrode quality, process consistency, and overall cell performance. Attendees will benefit from small-group interactions, direct access to state-of-the-art equipment, and ample opportunities for discussion with industry and academic experts. Full meals, refreshments, and a networking dinner in Rochester are provided to foster collaboration. This  seminar is designed for professionals seeking a rigorous, technically rich experience to elevate their expertise in lithium-ion battery manufacturing optimization.
