Signing Science: Academic Leadership in Deaf Spaces is a series of interviews with research leaders who have founded successful research programs that include, develop and promote deaf students, trainees, staff and faculty. Through these interviews, we hope to be able to promote thought and discussion about what it means to be a deaf-centered research leader across a range of academic disciplines.

Our third interview is with Dr. Raja Kushalnagar, professor and director of the information technology undergraduate program and accessible human-centered computing graduate program at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC. With over 15 years of experience in the accessible technology field and his own experiences as a deaf individual, Raja brings a wealth of lived experience and research to the field. He focuses on strategic planning, local industry, alumni relations, and faculty support. Raja has a Ph.D. in computer science and Master of Laws (LLM) in intellectual property and information law from the University of Houston in 2010 and Juris Doctor (JD) from Texas Southern University in 2008.

Dr. Kushalnagar will be interviewed by Dr. James Waller, a postdoctoral associate in the Accessible Information and Communications Technologies (AICT) Center. Time will be reserved at the end of the interview for questions from the audience.

Presentation in ASL. Interpreting and captioning services have been requested. This session will be recorded.
This series was made possible through an RIT Provost’s Leadership Opportunity Grant.
