CANCELLED Slow Disaster: History, Memory, Justice. A Science, Technology, and Society Lecture

Disasters are immediate, but they are also slow, moving across time and aggregating loss and suffering. Why don’t we usually think of disasters this way? This talk explores the slow disaster concept, pointing to the power relations that construct disaster temporality, and the impact on those who suffer the most. Case studies of Port Arthur, Texas, and Jeju Island, South Korea will be presented, and the audience will be encouraged to develop and share their own ideas.

Dr. Scott Gabriel Knowles, a leading disaster historian and professor in the Graduate School of Science and Technology Policy at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, will present as part of the Science, Technology, and Society speaker series “Environmental Justice in the Context of Science, Technology, and Disaster Studies” (with funding generously provided by the CLA Dean’s Office, as well as the STS and History Departments and the Fram Chair for Applied Critical Thinking).
