SMERC Seminar: Exploring Motivation's Role in Co-Curricular Engagement

SMERC Seminar
Exploring Motivation’s Role in Co-Curricular Engagement

Dr. Cassandra Jamison

Rowan University

Abstract
: Co-curricular engagement in engineering has been credited for developing a broad range of professionally relevant skills in students and supporting retention and belonging in engineering. While we know a great deal about the outcomes of engagement, we know less about how student motivations inform how they decide to engage or how they interpret how their engagement will influence their future careers. This talk will highlight a few examples of work that explores how motivation shapes co-curricular engagement and influences career preparation.

Bio: Cassie Jamison, PhD holds a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Science from Wartburg College in Waverly, IA and Master’s and PhD degrees in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. Her research interests lie at the intersections of cocurricular and experiential learning, professional preparation, and industry needs. Her work focuses on identifying ways to better connect students to the experiences that will prepare them for engineering careers.
