SPIE/OSA Workshop:How is a sextant used for navigation?Rick HibbsRochester Power SquadronAbstract:Celestial navigation is both an ancient and modern practice for determining position on land or at sea. Join the SPIE/OSA student chapter to learn from Rick Hibbs about how the sextant, a tool used to measure angular distance between objects, is used in conjunction with the moon and stars for navigation. Rick will cover historical and modern practices.Speaker Bio:Rick Hibbs is an experienced navigator and a seasoned sailor. He is currently a member of the Rochester Power Squadron and Genesee Yacht Club, and has been involved in teaching newcomers the basics of sailing.Intended Audience:No background knowledge is required. All are welcome.Event is hosted by SPIE/OSA RIT Student chapter.
