Symposium on Bhutan_s Philosophy of Gross National Happiness and Its Relevance for Western Society
The Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan_s concept of Gross National Happiness has provoked much interest and controversy since it was first proposed as an alternative to the measure of Gross National Product that determines the prosperity and success of most other countries. The presenters at this symposium have all traveled to Bhutan and will address various philosophical aspects (e.g., ethical, social, religious, economic, environmental) of Gross National Happiness and its relevance to Western society. The symposium is not a forum to discuss either the internal or international politics of the Bhutanese government.
