Type Specimens: A Book Born in the Cary Archives with Dori Griffin

Type Specimens: A Visual History of Typesetting and Printing explores founders' and printers' specimens as a way of understanding the visual format and professional practice of the specimen. As the inaugural Cary Fellow in 2015, Griffin laid the research foundations for the book's coverage of Western European and North American specimens. The book's discussion of global type specimens and cross-cultural typographic exchange emerged through subsequent research in digital archives. This talk will focus on the design-writing process connected to archival research and writing about design and preview key moments in the book. Type Specimens is forthcoming from Bloomsbury Academic in December 2021.
