Lecture title: "Challenges in Non-Latin Type Design"

Mark Jamra, together with studio partner, RIT grad Neil Patel, is creating innovative type systems in non-Latin scripts for use in under-served language communities in the US and abroad. These are multi-font type families designed and produced for use in everything from printed matter to mobile devices.

Mark will speak about their process of designing type for languages they don’t speak, in scripts they can’t read, and the considerable challenges they’re facing in introducing their fonts to emerging markets. This involves generally doing what is necessary to create useful designs that are respectful to the needs and culture of a specific language community.
