DISENTANGLING THE MEDIA PORTRAYAL OF DEAF WOMEN IN THE DEAF PRESIDENT NOW! MOVEMENT

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 20
3:30-4:45 p.m.
EAS-2000

This project takes on a critical historical approach to document, collect, preserve, and disseminate new understandings about deaf history, women’s history, American history as well as the minority rights revolution.  Between 2018 and 2019, deaf women were documented discussing their intersectional experiences, not to mention their involvement within the Deaf President Now! (DPN) movement of 1988.  Documented focus groups and individual interviews are used to collect data about deaf women leaders/administrators in higher education regarding the DPN movement and its subsequent effects in society and the workplace.

Deirdre Schlehofer is Associate Professor in Cultural & Creative Studies at RIT/NTID.  Schlehofer earned her bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Alaska at Anchorage, then went on to earn her master of philosophy degree from the University of Bristol, England, and her doctorate in teaching and curriculum from the University of Rochester. Her primary interests include critical theory, deaf women's issues, and qualitative research methods with signing communities.
