WGS FALL SPEAKERS SERIESLAURA FINLEY Associate Professor Department of Sociology and Criminology, Barry CollegeCREATING CAMPUS-COMMUNITY COLLABORATIONS TO EDUCATE ABOUT DATING AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCETHURSDAY, OCT. 17 12:00-2:00 PM UNIVERSITY GALLERY The lecture is part of College Brides Walk Event. The College Brides Walk, launched in 2011 on the campus of Barry University, is intended to raise awareness about dating and domestic violence. The idea is adapted from the Brides March, which advocate and activist Josie Ashton created in 2001 to pay tribute to Gladys Ricart, who was murdered on September 26, 1999 by her abusive ex-boyfriend, just minutes before she was to go to the chapel to marry her fiancé. Additional information can be found at www.collegebrideswalk.com. 9:30-10:30 AM: Come to the University Gallery and create signage and costuming to wear in the march or around campus for the day (this could be t-shirts with messages or wedding attire such as veils, hats, etc.) 11:00 AM-12:00 PM: March along the Quarter Mile to the University Gallery.Laura Finley earned her doctorate in Sociology from Western Michigan University in 2002. She is currently Professor of Sociology & Criminology at Barry University in Miami, Florida. Dr. Finley is also the author, co-author or editor of 30 books as well as numerous journal articles and book chapters. In addition, Dr. Finley is an active member of many peace, justice, and gender equality organizations, as she serves on the Board of Directors of No More Tears, The Humanity Project, Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty and the Peace and Justice Studies Association and is co-founder of the College Brides Walk.  Sponsored by CLA WGS Program, School of Communication, COMM/WGST 357, and the Center for Women and Gender Contact: Dr. Nickesia Gordon, School of Communication (nickesia.gordon@rit.edu)  Interpreting services available upon request
