WGS Speakers Series – Laura Finley: Educating About Dating and Domestic Violence

The College Brides Walk, launched in 2011 on the campus of Barry University, is intended to raise awareness about dating and domestic violence. The idea is adapted from the Brides March, which advocate and activist Josie Ashton created in 2001 to pay tribute to Gladys Ricart, who was murdered on September 26, 1999 by her abusive ex-boyfriend, just minutes before she was to go to the chapel to marry her fiancé. Additional information can be found at www.collegebrideswalk.com. 9:30-10:30 AM: Come to the University Gallery and create signage and costuming to wear in the march or around campus for the day (this could be t-shirts with messages or wedding attire such as veils, hats, etc.) 11:00 AM-12:00 PM: March along the Quarter Mile to the University Gallery.Laura Finley earned her doctorate in Sociology from Western Michigan University in 2002. She is currently Professor of Sociology & Criminology at Barry University in Miami, Florida. Dr. Finley is also the author, co-author or editor of 30 books as well as numerous journal articles and book chapters.
