Area Students Claim National Honors in the 2004 Scholastic Arts Awards

Rochester-area middle- and high-school student artists are among the national winners in the 2004 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. The student will be honored during an awards ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City on Thursday, June 10.

A work by Alexandra Fuller, a student at Pittsford-Mendon High School, is being singled out for special recognition. Her painting, “Seeking,” is winner of the American Vision Award as the best overall entry submitted from the 10-county Rochester region. It is also a Gold Award selection in the painting category. Other national winners include:

  • Matt Calabrese, West Irondequoit; Silver Award, photography portfolio
  • Charles Ciraolo, Johanna Perrin Middle School (Fairport), painting
  • Owen Hardy, Alfred-Almond; Silver Award, ceramics/glass
  • Jeffrey Ogden, Nazareth Hall Middle School (Rochester); Silver Award, digital imagery
  • Tyrone Perry, School of the Arts (Rochester); Silver Award, drawing
  • Andrew Ryan, Pittsford Sutherland; Silver Award, drawing
  • Terra Worboys, Marcus Whitman; Silver Award, mixed media

The winning entries are among 1,200 works that competed last winter in the regional Scholastic Art Awards, hosted by Rochester Institute of Technology. It is the fifth consecutive year that RIT hosted the regional event, made possible by the support of M&T Bank and a New York state grant secured by Sen. James Alesi.

Award-winning pieces will be displayed as part of the Scholastic Art Awards National Student Art Exhibition, which will be on display June 19 through August 2 at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. An online gallery will be available this fall at www.artandwriting.com.
