Art Enhanced by Computers Opens at Gallery r, Aug. 18

Can a sketch artist’s tool be a laptop computer?

You bet! Original imagery from three Rochester Institute of Technology artists will be featured in Gallery r’s newest exhibition, Using the Computer / 3 Views. The show opens with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 18, with music by Inventia, a Rochester-based experimental/improvisational group featuring Ed Buscemi, Chuck Bianchi and Greg Herman.

The exhibition closes with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16, during Rochester’s “Gallery Week.”

“Using the Computer” presents three different approaches to using the computer as an artist’s tool: Greg Herman (third-year New Media Design student) will be exhibiting a series of works created using 3D software and Photoshop. RIT alumnus Ed Buscemi will be displaying ink drawings where the computer is used both to duplicate and alter the original image. Joe Painter, BFA graduate in fine art photography, has created “random generation” prints that represent and approach to digitally transforming a photo into a non-representational image.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Gallery r will host an artist’s talk at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 21, followed by an informal reception.

Gallery r, Rochester Institute of Technology’s student-run metro showcase for contemporary art, is located at 775 Park Ave. Admission is free and the gallery is handicapped accessible. For more information, call 242-9470 or visit www.galleryr.org.
