Becker Named Director of RIT’s Facilities Management Services
Rochester Institute of Technology has named Marty Becker of Pittsford director of the university’s Facilities Management Services. In the position, Becker oversees a staff of 206 responsible for RIT’s 4.5 million square feet of living, learning and working space, more than 33 miles of roads and sidewalks, and over 1,300 acres.
Becker directed the university’s summer construction projects worth a total of more than $30 million, many intended to make campus more aesthetically pleasing, efficient and safe. He describes RIT as a vibrant place to work, saying the university has added 500,000 square feet of classroom and office space over the last 10 years.
"We’re proud of what we do in making the RIT campus special," Becker says.
"Marty has the ability to envision what’s necessary and appropriately evaluate human resources and financial capital to support the required mission," says James Watters, RIT vice president for finance and administration.
Previously acting director, Becker replaced Roy Demenint, who retired in December. Prior to being named acting director, Becker was director of design and construction services and associate director of Physical Plant. He began his RIT career in 1990 following 10 years operating construction and commercial property management firms. He oversaw construction of bank branches and management of two downtown Rochester sites for the former Security Trust Co.
Becker earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Syracuse University and was an engineering officer while serving in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. His career in construction and property management spans more than three decades and, in 1979, he became one of few in the Rochester area to earn certified property manager designation from the Institute of Real Estate Management.
"RIT’s a great place to be and an exciting place to work," Becker says.
Note: Founded in 1829, RIT is internationally recognized as a leader in engineering, imaging, technology, fine and applied arts, and education for the deaf. RIT enrolls 15,000 students in more than 240 undergraduate and graduate programs.
