Machine learning guru to talk at RIT March 31
A leading figure in artificial intelligence will talk about machine learning at Rochester Institute of Technology as part of the RIT Data Science Research Group Seminar Series.
Robert Schapire will present “The Contextual Bandits Problem: A Fast, Simple and Optimal Algorithm,” from 3 to 5 p.m. on March 31, in RIT’s Chester F. Carlson Building, room 1125. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Schapire is senior research scientist at Microsoft Research. His research led to the machine learning algorithms known as “boosting.” He and colleague Yoav Freund wrote about their influential research in the book, Boosting: Foundations and Algorithms, published in 2012 by Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Schapire has won many awards, including the prestigious Gödel prize for his foundational work in statistical machine learning and artificial intelligence. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Sciences.

New evidence shows crash with Antlia 2 gave the Milky Way the ripples in its outer disc
The newly-discovered dark dwarf galaxy Antlia 2’s collision with the Milky Way may be responsible for our galaxy’s characteristic ripples in its outer disc, according to a study led by Assistant Professor Sukanya Chakrabarti. The Antlia 2 dwarf galaxy was discovered from the second data release of the European Space Agency’s Gaia mission, which aims to chart a three-dimensional map of our galaxy.

RIT to host youth summer workshops on clean energy and fuel cells July 9-12
RIT is hosting workshops this summer to help high school students from the Rochester area learn about the science behind clean energy and fuel cells. The “Clean Energy: Electricity Generation Using Fuel Cells” workshops feature hands-on experiments and tours of RIT’s facilities.

Grit Happens: Baja SAE Rochester crowns season race champion at RIT and Hogback Hill
The University of Michigan-Ann Arbor took first place overall at the 2019 Baja SAE Rochester challenge, an international student-design competition that challenges students to apply classroom knowledge with real-world applications. RIT placed 10th overall among 100 collegiate race teams that took on a daunting motor cross field and four challenging days of competition.
