    What’s it like to run a company many in Congress want to close down? During the Saunders College of Business 10th Executive Leaders Network Luncheon on Oct. 2, Timothy J. Mayopoulous, president and CEO of Fannie Mae, explained how the mortgage management giant and its smaller sibling, Freddie Mac, are critical to the national economy. “Housing finance is very important to the country, and since the Great Depression, we’ve been a mortgage lender in all times and in all markets to single-family and multifamily properties.” The event was held at Genesee Valley Club and sponsored by Toshiba Business Solutions.

    Apple was among the 250 employers meeting with RIT students and alumni at the 2014 Fall Career Fair Oct. 1. A diverse range of employers were represented, including computing technology companies such as Google, Microsoft, Apple and Facebook, engineering companies such as Tesla Motors and Toyota and government agencies such as the CIA and the NSA. More than 765 recruiters will be looking to fill co-op and full-time positions.

    Oct. 2 marks the ninth annual ROAR Day, the official launch of the 2014 Fund for RIT annual giving campaign.     The RIT women’s cross country team is continuing its ascent in the national rankings of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll, now ranked No. 20, as the organization released its weekly rankings on Oct. 8. The Tigers moved up 12 spots this week to claim their highest ranking in school history. The Tigers, who are also ranked No. 5 in the Atlantic Region rankings, return to action on Oct. 18 at the Inter Regional Rumble hosted by Oberlin College. Here, Stephanie Milici competes in the 2014 University of Rochester Yellowjacket Invitational on Sept. 20.

    Carol Glazer, president of the National Organization on Disability, joined RIT and national leaders in challenging other universities to bridge the employment gap for students with disabilities. RIT has been credited by the National Organization on Disability as a good example of a university that successfully helps its students find jobs upon graduation.     RIT’s School for American Crafts sold its unique hand-blown glass pumpkins and gourds during the 10th annual Glass Pumpkin Patch fundraiser Sept. 27. Proceeds from the sale benefited the Visiting Artists Series for the RIT glass program as well as RIT Women’s Council scholarships.

    The RIT women’s soccer team tallied two second-half goals en route to a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Nazareth College Sept. 24 at Tiger Stadium. The team returns to action on Sept. 27 when the Tigers open up Liberty League play with a home match against Clarkson University at 3 p.m. at Tigers Stadium.

    Anthropologist Genevieve Bell, Intel’s “secret weapon,” was the guest speaker at the third annual Eugene H. Fram Applied Critical Thinking lecture on Sept. 23. Bell is vice president and director of user experience for Intel Labs, the company’s research arm. An authority on the intersection of culture and technology, and one of the most influential women in the technology sector, Bell discussed “Making Life: A Prehistory of Robots and its Importance for Metacognition, Society and Biopolitical Future.”

    The new Steelcase Learning Innovation Classroom (SLIC) opened Sept. 24 in George Eastman Hall. Students, faculty and staff tested out the multimodal learning experience in this interactive new facility. The classroom features moveable furniture that allows for quick reconfiguration and group work, high-tech interactive white boards and large monitors around the room.
