    Rochester Mayor Robert Duffy accepted an offer to be Attorney General Andrew Cuomo’s running mate for his Democratic campaign for governor on May 26. Duffy is a 1993 alumnus of RIT, with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.

    RIT Housing Operations’ summer grounds crew, led by Craig Hauschild, planted a creative tiger-theme garden on Andrews Drive near University Commons.

    The RIT Baja team made history May 19-22 by placing first overall at its meet in Washington state. Despite numerous top-10 finishes in the team’s history, this marks the first time the off-road vehicle team took top honors in national or international competitions. The team placed first in the rock climb event and second in maneuverability, and it had top placements in endurance, hill climb and design portions of the competition. RIT competed against 99 other collegiate design teams from the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, South Africa and India.

    Ali Bird, a graduate from the department of communication, College of Liberal Arts, gets some assistance from her father before the commencement ceremony on May 21. The gold cords recognize her honors status and the red and white cords her membership in Lambda Pi Eta, a national communication honors society.

    Longtime broadcaster Bob Schieffer will deliver the keynote address during RIT’s 125th commencement on May 21. Prior to the ceremony, Schieffer signed copies of his book Bob Schieffer’s America.

    International students from RIT’s colleges in Dubai, Croatia and Kosovo traveled many hours and adjusted to several time zones to participate in the upcoming commencement ceremonies. They toured the RIT campus for the first time and spent time in the machine shop with members of the RIT Formula SAE team.

    Construction is moving along on the Vignelli Center for Design Studies. The four-story facility is expected to be completed at the end of May, with an official dedication scheduled for September. The Vignelli Center will house the entire archive of renowned designers Massimo and Lella Vignelli, whose graphic and product designs are icons of international design.

    Lisa Beach, wellness coach, takes RIT employee Nancy Drum’s blood pressure. The two have met regularly since January 2009 to assist Drum in her wellness goals. Drum lowered her blood pressure to normal ranges, developed and maintained healthy eating strategies and committed to a regular physcial activity program.
