RIT’s Women in Engineering program hosted a two-week summer camp for middle school girls. The camp, developed and presented by RIT students, faculty and staff, included interactive exhibits and activities specifically designed to enhance understanding and enthusiasm for science, math and engineering. The camp ran July 7-18. Here, one team created a bowling alley with recycled materials and tested it out.

Final touches continue at Park Point, featuring a 40,000-square-foot Barnes & Noble bookstore, several ethnic restaurants, a hair salon and upscale apartments. Here’s a sneak peek at the Barnes & Noble store, opening on July 28. It will house over 60,000 titles, a Starbucks Cafe and gift and clothing departments. It will have wireless access throughout and a shuttle service to and from campus.

RIT Goes West. The RIT Board of Trustees and key administrators traveled to the West Coast July 9-11. RIT leaders met with 22 companies during the trip, most in the Silicon Valley. Here, members of the RIT delegation are given a demonstration by leaders of Cisco. Cisco has developed new technology called “TelePresence.” It allows business leaders to meet “virtually” through video and surround sound, anywhere in the world.

RIT’s School of Print Media hosted the Publishing and Advertising Summer Workshop for two dozen high school juniors from across the country. During the four-day workshop, participants worked with professors and graduate and undergraduate students to produce a marketing campaign about Kodak’s Multimedia Digital Picture Frames. Here, Tom Hoehn, director of brand communications and new media, Eastman Kodak Co. and Jenny Cisney, chief blogger at Kodak.com, both RIT alumni, examine some of the resulting work.

Bob Chandler published his first book, Minus the Imple, using Lulu.com. Chandler is a marketing communications specialist at Wallace Library.

An RIT research team, including Stefan Preble, assistant professor of microsystems engineering, right, is working to enhance the development of silicon photonics. The technique could enhance the performance and memory capacity of computers and electronics.

RIT has opened its first ‘green’ building, as part of its ongoing sustainability efforts. The new College of Applied Science and Technology Building was designed to meet the standards of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Rating System of the U.S. Green Building Council, the most widely accepted rating system for evaluating sustainable, high-performance buildings.

This modem was used to place the first TTY call in May 1964. The technology enabled deaf persons to use the telephone for the first time and eventually opened the world of communication for deaf persons. It is now on permanent display in the Deaf Archives collection in Wallace Library.

The Undergraduate Student Honors Exhibition at Bevier Gallery will continue through summer 2008. The exhibit showcases undergraduate work, selected by faculty and representing all art programs.

Construction began this spring on the south loop multi-use trail project. Once work is completed—anticipated by this fall—a 10-foot-wide asphalt sidewalk and bikeway along Andrews Drive will connect existing walkways near Wiltsie Drive and Gleason Circle. “We can’t wait for the path to be completed,” says Ed Wolf, president of student government, which pushed for the construction of the multi-use trail.

Barbara Letvin, formerly from Student Affairs, reconnected with John Paliouras, a past dean of the College of Science, at the RIT Retiree Picnic held on June 11. The event was held at the Gordon Field House and Activities Center.
