The symposium celebrated students and faculty members who are studying abroad or recently returned from a global learning experience. The reception included exhibits from students showcasing their academic achievements while abroad and also recognized new international fellowship and scholarship winners.

    Rohan Patel, a graduate student in human-computer interaction from India and a graduate coordinator in RIT’s FoodShare, sorts items at the center. The center stocks donated non-perishable foods and a limited amount of fresh produce for students and others at RIT to pick up for free. The center is celebrating two years in operation this month.

    Book artist Richard Minsky is delivering an illustrated talk at 6 p.m. April 27 at the Cary Graphic Arts Collection to demonstrate how his works of book art are designed to manipulate emotion, intellect and consciousness through sight and touch.

    The Meaning of Things—in Three Objects class set sail at the Rochester Yacht Club April 22. The 9-credit immersion course, taught by three RIT faculty, explores three objects (the harmonica, the game and the sail) as a way of critically examining the world. Previous field trips included The Strong National Museum of Play and at Lovin’ Cup, where students played the harmonica with a band. The course is offered through the School of Individualized Study.

    RIT President Bill Destler gave his “last lecture” to students at an honors seminar on “Leadership, Sustainability and Ethics” for both engineering and business students. In his talk, he discussed electric vehicles and sustainability initiatives at RIT—and surprised the class by demonstrating the advanced technologies of his new electric car, a red Chevrolet BoltEV.

    From left, Dawn Carter, senior lecturer in biology and the coordinator for the RIT community garden, shares seeds with Mazin Mar, a fifth-year biotechnology student from Myanmar, and Chi Nguyen, a second-year PhD student in astrophysical science technology from Viet Nam. The garden began in 2009 using sustainable materials and methods. It’s divided into several individual plots and common areas. Any surplus is donated to Recover Rochester or Foodlink.

    Tyler Paine from Ithaca, N.Y., attended Tora-Con 2017 April 22-23. Anime enthusiasts attended the two-day event, which featured discussion panels, celebrity appearances, a concert, live action performances and countless costumed characters. The 13th annual event was put on by RIT’s Student Anime Club.

The award encourages the professional growth and development of RIT faculty and specifically recognizes those members of the academic body who contribute most to enhance student learning. Full-time faculty with seven years or more of full-time teaching experince are eligible for this award.

    Ana Sorensen, a second-year industrial design student from Davis, Calif., demonstrates a transfer lift that will improve accessibility for skiers with impaired leg movement during the fourth Effective Access Technology Conference on April 21. The event, which showcased the work, research and development by students and faculty to enhance accessibility for individuals across a wide variety of challenges, featured more than 30 exhibits and 20 poster presentations, panel discussions and a keynote address by Dr. Geoffrey Ling, former assistant director for medical innovation for the Obama administration and an expert in researching and developing technology for war-wounded veterans.
