Pre-College Portfolio Program Offered by RIT Art School

Some area teenagers are getting a head start at ensuring their success in the competitive world of art. The students will participate in an intensive program being offered for the first time at Rochester Institute of Technology.

The Pre-College Portfolio Program is a college-level experience in painting, drawing and sculpture designed to help dedicated high school students develop skills necessary to prepare outstanding portfolios for entry into leading art programs. All aspects of compiling a professional portfolio will be addressed, including ways to create exceptional art images, how to photograph art and how to present finished work.

Students will have the opportunity to work in RIT’s fine art, painting and sculpture studios. Classes include demonstrations with materials, as well as hands-on projects that seek to refine technical and conceptual skills.

"Each student is expected to engage in serious study, exploring different philosophies and media which will build their portfolio," says Zerbe Sodervick, coordinator of extended studies in RIT’s College of Imaging Arts and Sciences. "It also offers these young artists a chance to interact with other area high school students and professionals in the field."

Clifford Wun, RIT assistant professor of foundations, will serve as lead instructor. Recent fine art graduates from RIT will assist Wun by offering workshop experiences.

The Pre-College Portfolio Program runs July 9–21 on RIT’s Henrietta campus. Up to a dozen area high school students are expected to participate.
