Register to participate in Cowboys Stadium Big Shot
Hundreds of RIT community members will be Texas two-steppin’ to Arlington, Texas, next month for RIT’s 28th Big Shot at Cowboys Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. There is still time to register to participate in the Saturday, March 23, photo-making event. Go to www.rit.edu/bigshot to register. Registration deadline is March 18.
Big Shot organizers have a pending application with Guinness World Records for the largest number of people involved in making a photograph. Thousands of people are expected to come out with their flashlights and camera flash units as they paint their designated area with light. RIT photographers will shoot an extended exposure and those who participate will have access to a digital file of the final image.
Students and faculty from the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science will be making an “image” of their own in connection with the project by producing a three-dimensional reconstruction of Cowboys Stadium as participants paint the exterior with light. This will allow viewers to do a virtual walk around the area in which the Big Shot was produced. The imaging scientists will use a technique known as “structure from motion” that emerged from a project at the University of Washington in which the city of Rome was reconstructed using photographs mined from the Web. RIT utilizes this idea with aerial imagery to reconstruct many of the areas that they image, including those affected by natural disasters to assess damage. Many photographs of a subject from various camera locations are required to complete the reconstruction. RIT hopes to mount at least 12 cameras at various locations throughout the stadium’s parking lots during the event.
