RIT Formula Car Team Has Best Presentation and Braking System

Rochester Institute of Technology’s Formula car team captured top awards in individual categories at annual Formula SAE competition, May 16–20, in Pontiac, Mich.

Competing against more than 100 other teams, RIT took first place for presentation and best braking system, second place in acceleration and power train development categories, fourth place for design, and fifth place for cost. Overall, RIT finished in 24th place.

RIT Formula team members are preparing for their next competition, July 5–8, in Birmingham, England. RIT was the international champion at the event in 1999.

According to Michael Occhipinti, fifth-year mechanical engineering major and RIT Formula team project manager, RIT’s car and team will be featured on "Car Crazy," at 8:30 p.m., June 4, on the Speedvision television network. The team will also be highlighted in upcoming editions of Racecar Engineering and RaceTech.

RIT students have designed and constructed Formula cars yearly since 1993. They build every component of their cars for Formula SAE collegiate competitions sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers.
