RIT Hosts 2,600 High School Athletes During Empire State Games

Thousands of athletes will swarm Rochester Institute of Technology this week.

Rochester is hosting the Empire State Games, the largest amateur sporting event in New York state, and the RIT campus will be at the heart of the Olympic-style games.

“Throughout the weekend, thousands of visitors will be here, as both spectators and competitors, from all over New York state,” says Cindee Gray, assistant vice president for Government and Community Relations. “This is a great opportunity to showcase RIT and another way to support the community at-large.”

In addition to hosting nine different sports, a media center and staff headquarters, 2,600 high school athletes will stay in RIT’s residence halls. The athletes will be served breakfast and dinner at Gracie’s dining facility in Grace Watson Hall.

The RIT admissions office is adding an additional campus tour to its schedule on Thursday and Friday to accommodate the games. Tours will be offered at 11 a.m., noon, 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. No appointment is necessary to participate in the tour, which is an hour-long student-guided walking tour of RIT’s academic, athletic and campus-life facilities.

Housing check-in begins at 11 a.m. Wednesday and runs all day. The bulk of the athletes are expected to arrive between 1 and 2 p.m.
