Scholastic Art Awards Judging Set for Jan. 6

A panel of judges is ready to select winners from more than 1,200 works of art created by local middle- and high-school students as Rochester Institute of Technology plays host to the 2001 Scholastic Art Awards and Exhibition.

Judging will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 6, at South Town Plaza. About two dozen judges will examine the artwork and chose the best of the best from various categories, featuring drawing, painting, sculpting, ceramics, photography, textiles, printmaking, computer graphics and mixed media.

The Scholastic Arts program aims to demonstrate student achievement through participation in the arts. Eligible students come from 165 schools in the 10-county Rochester-Finger Lakes region, including Allegany, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Wayne, Wyoming and Yates.

Program coordinators chose to conduct the judging in 6,000 square feet of vacant retails space at South Town to better accommodate the large amount of artwork. Afterwards, all entries will be relocated to RIT’s Henrietta campus and will go on display throughout the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences from Jan. 29–Feb. 21.

This is the second consecutive year that RIT has hosted the Rochester-Finger Lakes Scholastic Art Awards. For more information, call 475-2733.

NOTE: Media coverage of Saturday’s judging at South Town Plaza (next to Dunham’s Sporting Goods) is welcome.
