Welcome to the SHED. Classes begin Monday in the Student Hall for Exploration and Development

Welcome to the SHED! What you need to know about the SHED

For our new students on campus …welcome! To returning students, welcome back! And to faculty and staff, we are thrilled to update you.

It’s going to be a great semester and what better way to enjoy the RIT journey than with a new campus facility that will inspire innovation, creativity, collaboration, expression, and performance.

The new facility is now ready to welcome students, faculty, and staff into its teaching and learning spaces. Other parts of the SHED (Student Hall for Exploration and Development) require further finishing work with a goal of completion around mid-semester.

Here is what you need to know now:

Information on classes in the SHED:

The SHED includes five new active learning classrooms alongside the newly renovated Wallace Library with its 22 new classrooms.

All classroom areas in the SHED and Wallace, with the exception of the tiered classroom, SHED 3350, will hold classes starting Monday, Aug. 28. Faculty and students scheduled in SHED 3350 will shift to the BETA room in Slaughter Hall while we put the finishing touches on the tiered classroom. Those affected have been notified separately via email.

How do I enter the SHED?

There are a few ways to enter the SHED. For our initial opening to support classes, we ask that you enter the SHED off the quarter mile and/or through Wallace Library on the 1st and 2nd level.

What are the hours of operation for the SHED?

Our temporary hours to support teaching and learning spaces for the SHED are as follows:

  • Monday - Friday: 7:30 a.m. - 8 p.m.
  • Saturday, Sunday: Closed

Be on the lookout for when we launch our full hours of operation mid-semester.

Are all areas of the SHED open?

In addition to the classrooms, the SHED will also house new makerspaces, studios, and performing arts facilities. Some of these areas are still a work in progress. You will see workers completing the Sklarsky Glassbox Theater, practice rooms, Makerspaces on the A Level, as well as the Dance Studio and Music Instruction Studio.

Please adhere to the temporary signage outlining which areas of the SHED are open and which areas of the SHED require additional time for completion.

What if my student organization has been allocated space in the SHED?

Early in the fall semester, we will host a meeting with student teams and groups to go over further details. You can expect to hear from the SHED team with more information coming soon about moving into the SHED.

Are reservations in the SHED open?

We are kicking off the semester supporting and focusing on teaching and learning in the SHED with scheduled courses. As more areas approach completion, you will find the SHED live within various templates on reserve.rit.edu. We will update you as these spaces become available for reservation.

Will there be an official SHED “Opening”?

We have some big plans to celebrate. More details are coming soon regarding a planned community open house. We also will hold an official ribbon cutting and dedication during Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend.

I am honored to serve as the executive director for the SHED and am grateful to have worked alongside many partners within the RIT community to ensure this space is ready to inspire imagination. Looking forward to seeing you all in the SHED this year.
