Description
The Interpreting Services Department at The Learning Center for the Deaf provides American Sign

Language interpreting in a variety of settings, including educational, medical and therapeutic

environments. Our Deaf interpreters have extensive training in utilizing their native knowledge of

ASL for assessment and specialized situations. These assignments require nuanced translations

that contain cultural, visual, tactile and linguistic elements. We also provide information regarding

the Deaf Community, how to work with interpreters, and how to make communication more

accessible. Our team of schedulers coordinate, schedule, and support interpreters in an effort to

maintain the smooth operation of the entire department.

SUPERVISOR: Director of Interpreting Services

FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Interpreters will provide interpreting services for a variety of internal and external clients for in-

person or remote requests.

Interpreting assignments can range from but are not limited to administrative meetings, student

and parent conferences, educational mainstreaming, in-services, mental health situations, IEP/ISP

meetings, guest lectures, field trips, performing arts, and formal ceremonies.

Interpreters will work solo or teamed with interpreters such as ASL Interpreters and Legal

interpreters as appropriate.

Maintain professional growth and certification through participation in Certificate Maintenance

Program (CMP) or Associate Continuing Education Tracking (ACET).

Participate in in-service and staff development activities, as appropriate.

Performs other tasks as directed by the Supervisor.

Deaf Interpreter required to have a general Deaf interpreter training in addition to having specialized training and knowledge of meeting unique communication modes
Use standard practices and ethical decision making in accordance to the Code of
Professional Conduct and the Standard Practice Papers
Must have a minimum of one to five years of experience as a working interpreter, or equivalent experience
Must have or be willing to obtain the status of Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing State Approved Deaf Interpreter, national certification preferred (RID, BEI)
Ability to work both collaboratively and independently
Strong Google Suite skills and general computer literacy
A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
