Job Description:
Tenure-Track/Tenure-Eligible Investigator
Laboratory of Host Immunity and Microbiome
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases
National Institutes of Health
Department of Health and Human Services

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) — one of
the largest Institutes of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), part of
the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)—is seeking to
recruit outstanding, highly creative scientists to positions as
tenure-track/tenure-eligible investigators (equivalent to assistant or
associate professor level academic faculty) in its newly established
Laboratory of Host Immunity and Microbiome (LHIM) in the Division of
Intramural Research (DIR).

NIAID’s mission is to conduct and support basic and applied research to
better understand, treat, and ultimately prevent infectious, immunologic, and
allergic diseases. The vision of the new LHIM—led by Dr. Yasmine
Belkaid—is to comprehensively examine the factors controlling immunity and
inflammation, whether they are host intrinsic (e.g., tissue-specific or the
consequence of tissue-tissue communication) or extrinsic (e.g., involve the
microbiota, nutrition, or infection). Ongoing research within LHIM includes
exploration of host-microbiota interactions, the long-term consequences of
environmental stress on host immunity, and nutritional control of immunity.
In pursuing its scientific goals, a major emphasis of LHIM will be on
promoting collaborations between the laboratories within NIAID as well as
with the larger National Institutes of Health (NIH) and extramural scientific
communities. LHIM also has a strong emphasis on mentorship and fostering
increased diversity in the next generation of scientific leaders. Additional
information about LHIM staff, vision, and ongoing research activities is
available online.

LHIM has been specifically organized to harness the unique resources
available at NIH to conduct cutting-edge research. For example, it is home to
the NIAID Microbiome Program that supports microbiome-related research
through gnotobiotic, microbiology, and genomic core services. LHIM has also
established a close partnership with the adjacent Laboratory of Immune System
Biology to foster a rich intellectual and technological local environment.
Some shared resources include: single-cell analysis, proteomics, genomics,
and advanced imaging along with jointly held seminars and journal clubs and
opportunities for mini-rotations to learn new methods and interact with other
senior scientists in NIAID.

The ideal candidate will be an exceptional early or mid-stage investigator
who shares LHIM’s vision for collaboration and mentorship and the
application of transdisciplinary approaches to the exploration of
host-microbe, tissue-tissue, or host-environment interactions. Areas of
research focus could include but are not limited to: immunology (e.g., human
immunology, immunometabolism, nutritional immunology), as well as
microbiology (e.g., ecology, antimicrobial resistance), chemistry (e.g.,
microbiota-derived natural products), neuroscience (e.g., gut/brain axis), or
genomics, with a particular interest in enhancing our understanding of host
immunity. The incumbent will be expected to develop an innovative and highly
collaborative research program that includes basic and/or translational
studies. Applicants must have an M.D., Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D., or equivalent
doctoral degree in a relevant field with postdoctoral experience as well as a
strong publication record demonstrating potential for creative research.

This position is fully funded by the intramural research program of NIAID and
includes support for salary, laboratory support personnel, equipment, space,
supplies and services, and research animals/animal housing. Access is also
provided to dedicated technical cores within NIAID in areas such as advanced
imaging, flow cytometry, and genomics. Although sufficient support is
provided for a strong research program, investigators and trainees are also
eligible to apply for additional funding from sources such as NIH internal
grants (e.g., Bench-to-Bedside and Back Program), non-governmental research
foundations, or partnerships with industry.

The intramural NIH community spans all field of biological research and is
home to over 1,000 immunologists across numerous Institutes beyond NIAID. The
incumbent will have access to state-of-the-art specialized cores in many of
these other NIH intramural Institutes, the NIH Clinical Center (a premier
research hospital on the main NIH campus), and the NIH Center for Human
Immunology. In addition to postdoctoral fellowships, the intramural program
offers numerous opportunities to host graduate students (Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D.)
via the NIH Oxford-Cambridge Scholars Program or through agreements with
universities such as the NIH-Penn Immunology Graduate Partnership Program.

Salary is commensurate with experience and accomplishments. A full
civil-service package of benefits (including retirement; health, life, and
long-term care insurance; and a Thrift Savings Plan) is available. Women and
people from groups underrepresented in biomedical research are especially
encouraged to apply. U.S. citizenship is not required—resident aliens or
nonresident aliens eligible to obtain a valid employment-authorizing visa are
encouraged to apply.

Applicants must submit four items (the first three items must be in a PDF
format):
1.	A curriculum vitae (CV), including a list of publications
2.	A three-page proposal titled Research Goals outlining the research you
hope to perform at the NIH in both the short and long term
3.	A description of your leadership, mentoring and outreach
activities—especially those involving women and persons from other groups
that are underrepresented in biomedical research—to promote inclusive
excellence in the biomedical research workforce
4.	At least three reference letters submitted directly from the referees

All materials should be submitted to Dr. Sarah Cavanaugh at
NIAIDDIRSearch@niaid.nih.gov [1]. Applications will be reviewed starting
October 1, 2021, and will be accepted until the position is filled.

Interested candidates may also contact Dr. Yasmine Belkaid, Chief, LHIM, at
ybelkaid@niaid.nih.gov [2] for additional information about this position.

atmosphere!

equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
