Job Title: Linguistics Research Assistant
Job Type: Part-time
Start Date: 03/01/2022
Start Date: Flexible
Job Description:
ABOUT THE COMPANY
Tatum Robotics' mission is to create the first assistive communication
device for DeafBlind people that can translate English text input into
tactile ASL output. The device consists of a robotic hand/wrist, fully 3D
printed, which is now capable of fingerspelling and will eventually be
capable of producing complex signs and sentences. We see the device’s
utility both in the home (so that DeafBlind individuals can access things
like emails, text messages, or eBooks without the need of interpreting
services) as well as in institutions like schools (so that students whose
teachers are helping their peers can still learn).
Tatum Robotics is in collaboration with the Deaf-Blind Contact Center
(Allston, MA), the Candian Institute for the Blind, Perkins School for the
Deaf, and Sense International.
As a part-time researcher, you would be expected to work with us
between 3-8 hours per week. This is a paid opportunity!
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
As a research assistant with Tatum Robotics, you will be expected to:
* -Collaborate on the creation of a standard of glossing conventions for ASL
that will allow us to note sign production as accurately as possible in a
written form
* -Gloss ASL data as we receive it from consultants
* -Proofread and edit colleagues’ glosses to check for errors that would
prevent the gloss from being useful
* -Research linguistic concepts as they apply to ASL by searching multiple
databases and reaching out to researchers and writers
* -Analyze glossed data for patterns and conclusions alongside other
linguistics researchers
Requirements:
-Familiarity with linguistic terms and concepts related to morphology and
syntax
-Familiarity with interlinear glossing
-Working understanding of American Sign Language
-Attention to detail
-Curiosity about linguistics and language
-Familiarity with computational linguistics and/or natural language
processing/machine learning (preferred)
