Job Description:
I. Job Summary

Educates, teaches, facilitates, evaluates and plans lessons for the students
of Metro Deaf School as defined by the Metro Deaf School District Policy
Manual and the Minnesota Department of Education rules and regulations.

II. Duties and Responsibilities

Selects appropriate educational activities for the students assigned to
him/her which will meet the predetermined learner outcomes of the curriculum
and the graduation standards of Minnesota.

Demonstrates knowledge of and application of bilingual education and
methodology as it relates to the education of Deaf students.

Modifies and adapts materials to meet the individual needs of each learner
within the classroom.

Demonstrates fluency in ASL and written English, with an understanding of the
purpose of/ development of and application of L1 (ASL).

Is knowledgeable of content area assigned to teach.

Develops weekly lesson plans to ensure the lesson sequence is aligned with
the established curriculum, standards and outcomes.

Responsible to keep an up-to-date running record on students’
progress/performance in required format (record book or electronic
reporting).

Attends and participates in staff meetings, Professional Learning Community
(PLC) and team meetings for staff development, committees and curriculum
projects.

Coordinates curriculum and teaching procedures with other staff members in
department, team or grade level.

Communicates clearly and effectively student progress and curriculum concerns
to parents on a regular basis, reporting each trimester through progress
reports, IEP reviews and report cards.

Attends and participates in regularly scheduled activities outside of school
hours as directed by school administration.

Supervises students during the school day according to established building
supervision schedule as well as indirect supervision at all times during
school activities.

Works with support staff, parents, lead staff and administrators in dealing
with student concerns in and outside of his/her classroom.

Responsible for and complies with Minnesota Due Process requirements for
his/her assigned caseload.

Supervises and plans for educational assistants and or 1:1 aides as assigned
within his/her classroom.

Maintains current licensure in deaf and hard of hearing education in the
state of Minnesota.

Develops and maintains adequate knowledge of the subject(s) taught or support
services rendered, and demonstrates an understanding of how the subject(s) or
support services fit into the overall district philosophy, objectives and
curriculum.

Pursues professional development activities to broaden and deepen knowledge
of content and teaching skills and continually identifies professional needs
and develops strategies to meet these needs.

Participates in parent/teacher conferences.  Interprets student strengths,
weaknesses and/or problems that the student may be experiencing in the
classroom.

Establishes and maintains student control/discipline in the classroom, on
school premises, and/or in school activities by communicating expectations
for appropriate behavior.  Provides structure and consistency and encourages
student responsibility, cooperation and mutual respect in a manner consistent
with Metro Deaf School student policies and procedures and legal requirements

Normal requirements of the position will include parent conferences and
participating in administrative, department, curriculum or team meetings and
activities. An important function of a teacher is to work with students on an
individual basis and to accomplish this a longer teacher’s day or week may
be necessary.  The Employee’s normal duties shall also include a reasonable
share of extracurricular, co-curricular and supervisory activities as
determined by the Employer.  Normal duties for a Special Education Teacher
include meeting specified timelines within the Due Process system.
Completing paperwork, attending meeting with parents and others and knowing
how to access/apply State and Federal rules.

Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal.

III. Job Outcome

that contributes to the overall public relations of Metro Deaf School.

Maintains a positive and professional educational environment at all times.

Educates students to reach their full potential academically, emotionally,
physically and socially.

Requirements:
Conditions of Employment:
Selected applicant must verify experience/highest degree held
Minnesota Teaching License required (with application process initiated
by July 2020)
Upon an offer of employment, background checks will be conducted

Minimum Qualifications:
BA or Master’s Degree in Deaf Education; ability to obtain a Minnesota
Deaf/Hard of Hearing  Teaching License required
Native-user or fluency in American Sign Language required
Knowledge of Bilingual Education
Competency with instructional strategies
Must be able to work with staff and students of diverse linguistic and
cultural backgrounds
Ability to work collaboratively
Knowledge of IEPs and assessments
Knowledge of various learning styles and strategies for diverse learners
