TITLE:                            American Sign Language Instructor – SLS
(3 vacancies)

POSITION STATUS:    Part Time – Permanent (Non-Union)

SCHEDULE:                  Mon to Thurs (days and evening), Sat & Sun
(flexibility required)

REPORTS TO:              Sign Language Services Coordinator

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Bob Rumball Canadian Centre of Excellence for the Deaf (BRCCED) is a
multi-purpose, multi-program facility that functions as a community centre
for the Deaf and as a non-profit charitable provider of services for the
Deaf.  Our mission is to provide care and opportunities in a
communication-rich environment that enhances the quality of life of those we
serve. We are a highly motivated collaborative team on a mission to improve
the quality of life for those we serve. We take a person centred approach to
serve the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community that aims to support and make a
positive difference. Our perks include but is not limited to extended health

Reporting to the Sign Language Services Coordinator, the ASL Instructor for
Sign Language Services provides American Sign Language instruction, based on
the Signing Naturally Curriculum, for the hearing community.
PRIMARY DUTIES

•	Provide stimulating learning experience for youth and adult students
•	Encourage student engagement by providing a creative, positive learning
experience
•	Provide students additional in person and email support prior to quizzes
and final exams
•	Monitor class attendance and ensure that students receive learning
materials
•	Utilize diplomacy, confidentiality and good judgement with sensitive and
confidential information
•	Leverage policy and procedure, fairness and strong problem solving skills
to develop solutions when faced with ambiguous situations
•	Submit payroll information to the SLS Coordinator on a bi-weekly basis
•	Ensure learning objectives are met by following course outlines and
allocating time properly
•	Develop creative activities, based on different learning styles, to
ensure learning objectives are met
•	Contribute to the development of teaching material for classes, camps and
retreats
•	Ensure course outline is consistent with the Signing Naturally Curriculum
•	Maintain instructor files, including program and activities, for each
level of instruction
•	Prepare student report cards within tight timeline and submits report
cards to Sign Language Services (SLS) coordinator
•	Collaborate with team by attending and participating in meetings and
sharing information
•	Assist with marketing of ASL classes, camps, retreats and immersion weeks
to the hearing community
•	Performs other duties as assigned



Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS

•	Successful completion of High school (Grade 12)
•	Fluent in American Sign Language
•	Extensive knowledge, understanding and relationship with Deaf culture and
the Deaf community
•	Successful completion of Deaf Culture, Basic Linguistic Structures of ASL
and “Signing Naturally” Curriculum Level One, and/or Three training
•	Experience teaching using the Signing Naturally curriculum
•	Experience teaching in remote environment an asset
•	Highly developed leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills
•	Ability to multitask and meet deadlines when faced with competing
priorities
•	Ability to work with minimal supervision
•	Position may transfer to different locations based on business needs
•	Willingness to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends (as
requested)
•	Possesses valid full G Driver’s license
•	French/LSQ an asset
