Family Outreach Advocate

Position: Family Outreach Advocate Classification: Full time, Non-exempt
Supervisor: Regional Director, OC DEAF FTE: 100%
Location: Cypress, CA Division: OC DEAF

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the supervision of the Regional Director, the Family Outreach Advocate will:
1. Provide support, information and referrals for families with deaf or hard of hearing infants through 12th grade.
2. Provide assistance with the educational process and work with families on how to advocate in the Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) and/or Individual Educational Plan (IEP) processes.
3. Provide group and individual advocacy.
4. Develop relationships and establish regional resource networks.
5. Promote the services through video, print, postings and in person at selected conferences.
6. Educate families about the deaf and hard of hearing community and various laws and programs benefiting and protecting the rights of deaf persons.
7. Assist with consumer workshops, trainings for service providers and community events;
8. Record statistics on a daily basis related to provision of services.
9. Perform such tasks and responsibilities as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. B.A. or B.S. degree with two years of related experience. Must be fluent in Sign Language and possess the ability to assess and adapt sign styles to fit the communication needs of the individual who may be deaf, hard of hearing, deaf-blind or recently deafened.
2. Applicants must have the ability to work with families with deaf and hard of hearing infants through 12th grade.
3. Background knowledge of various laws and programs benefiting and protecting the rights of deaf and hard of hearing persons.
4. Have the ability to function in a team environment and be willing to drive long distances to outreach offices as needed.
5. Be a flexible self-starter and a resourceful team player; detail-oriented with strong organizational skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills.
6. Have the ability to thrive and prioritize to handle multiple tasks and sometimes with competing deadlines in a fast paced-environment; have excellent interpersonal skills and at all times be capable of maintaining a cooperative relationship with co-employees, directors, employers, community members, other agencies and the CEO.
7. Be punctual, reliable and able to handle confidential situations.
8. Involvement with deaf/hard of hearing community and strong English skills are desirable.
9. Have a professional demeanor, including phone manners and must be knowledgeable of office procedures.
Additional notes:
1. Hybrid schedule: MWF (work remotely from home); TTH (work in the office).
2. Applicants must have a valid Driver's License and current automobile insurance as required by law and reliable means of transportation.
3. As part of our hiring process, the selected candidate will be required to complete and pass a background check of references, criminal background screening and drug screening.
4. GLAD employees are required to provide documentation of vaccination against COVID-19.
