TITLE: LINC Instructor

POSITION STATUS: Part Time – Permanent (Non-Union)

SCHEDULE: Monday to Thursday (8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.)

REPORTS TO: LINC Program Lead

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Bob Rumball Canadian Centre of Excellence for the Deaf (BRCCED) is a multi-purpose, multi-program facility that functions as a community centre for the Deaf and as a non-profit charitable provider of services for the Deaf. The organization exists to provide care and opportunities in a communication-rich environment that enhances the quality of life of those we serve. Reporting to the LINC Program Lead, the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) Instructor provides instruction in the Essential Skills curriculum, based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks, to a group of Deaf Adult Immigrants.

PRIMARY DUTIES

Deliver LINC instruction to Deaf immigrant learners, using the Canadian Language Benchmarks in subjects such as English (reading and writing), American Sign Language, Numeracy and Canadian Citizenship
Ensure all learners have plans to achieve learning objectives
Use LINC curriculum and Essential Skills to develop daily lesson plans
Ensure all lesson plans are developed in advance in case of instructor absence
Complete monthly and annual updates on learners’ progress and forward reports to the manager to be filed
Assist with adapting English based learning materials into ASL as needed
Participate in field trips, staff meetings and professional development opportunities
Follow the policies and procedures of the organization, the Adult Education Program, and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada
Provide guidance to learners and families, informing the manager of any needed referrals

QUALIFICATIONS

Diploma or Degree in Education related field (an Ontario teaching certificate is preferred)
Minimum 2 years’ experience working with Deaf adult learners at Benchmark levels 1-4
Teachers of English as a Second Language (TESL) Canada Professional Certification (Standard One or higher) an asset
Experience working with adults of various cultural backgrounds
Fluency in American Sign Language
Excellent English skills (reading and writing)
Extensive knowledge of Deaf Culture and Deaf Community
Solid literacy, communication, interpersonal and computer skills
Knowledge of LINC Curriculum Guidelines and Canadian Language Benchmarks
Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality at all times
Ability to multitask and meet deadlines when faced with competing priorities
French/LSQ an asset
