To support this mission, the University of Rochester seeks several Interpreters for Deaf Professionals for full-time, part-time, and hourly positions. The Deaf Professional Interpreter Services program is a vital program at the University, providing language access services provided to Deaf and Hard of Hearing Professionals and Learners throughout the University of Rochester and URMC.

The Deaf Professional Interpreter provides interpreting services for Deaf Professionals affiliated with the University of Rochester. Interpreting work will include graduate level STEM topics, but is subject to change based on the needs of the individual(s) supported.

Population Served: Any UR Deaf Professional including learners, trainees, faculty, staff, and affiliates.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs interpreting duties:
• Prepares for and interprets all assignments in a timely and professional manner
• Fulfills the interpreting needs of Deaf Professionals and provides corresponding availability whenever possible
• Provides individualized accommodations through an advanced level of interpreting in a variety of settings throughout the Medical Center, Hospital, Central Administration and University
• Acts as an essential component for successful communication in high visibility and/or high impact settings with the ability to accurately represent subtlety of intent for longer and more complex discourse
• Uses analytical skills to assess each assignment and to select the appropriate processing level (lexical, phrasal, sentential, textual) based upon the needs of consumers, assignment demands, and cultural protocol
• Implements specialized expertise in specific modes (Signed English, ASL, etc.) by assessing and adapting to the individualized needs of each DHH consumer
• Facilitates understanding, rapport building, and an effective workplace by recognizing and mediating cross cultural challenges and nuances and by applying a high level of situational awareness

Coordination and Communication
• Collaborates closely with scheduling team to make effective and autonomous decisions improving access and workflow
• Helps to triage and prioritize interpreting requests through coordinating with interdepartmental parties to ensure optimal equity and access
• Communicates with team members, agency partners, and scheduling team with the goal of providing a seamless transition/handoff from service provider to service provider
• Engages in open dialogue with leadership, scheduling, and team members to advise on scheduling approaches based on knowledge of assignment dynamics and DHH access needs
• Provides ad-hoc education to UR and URMC staff, faculty, and learners regarding best practices for working with interpreters and DHH colleagues and for running effective and accessible virtual meetings, webinars, and conferences
• May work with external organizations to help with coordinating off-site meetings and conference access as indicated
• May sit on working groups or committees as indicated
• Serves as a liaison between the Deaf Professional and the Deaf-Professional Schedulers by maintaining the Deaf Professional’s interpreting calendar when applicable
• Completes other paperwork as necessary

Professional Development
• Continues to enhance skill level and broaden content knowledge by engaging in self-directed research, reading, observations, seminars, conferences, and/or other skill development activities
• Builds breadth and depth of specialized content knowledge in areas that can span the University and Medical Center
• Leads and/or engages in supervision sessions to reflect on decisions made while practicing, to consider feedback from other practitioners, and to develop further knowledge and competence in complex interpreting situations
• Engages in staff activities including team meetings and is responsible for gathering information shared when unable to attend
• Completes all mandatory education and health updates
• Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Two years of post-high school education required.
• Minimum of two years of general interpreting in a health care setting required; or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
• Experience interpreting STEM topics.
• Adherence to tenets within the RID Interpreter Code of Professional Conduct required;
• Ability to work in a collaborative and interactive environment required;
• Ability to correct mistakes made in the interpretation process and clearly communicate steps take to correct those mistakes to everyone involved required;
• Ability to receive feedback and adapt before, during, and after the interpretation process required;
• Ability to be flexible in dynamic environments which may involve last minute changes in scheduling, unexpected situations, high-stakes meetings, high-pressure clinical areas, etc. required.
• Ability to operate with a high level of professionalism, discernment, and confidentiality to align with the hierarchy, context, goals, and demands specific to each assignment required.
• Ability to provide flexible availability that corresponds to the DHH consumers’ schedules including days, nights, weekends, holidays, overnights, split-shifts, etc. required.
• Membership with The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and adherence to tenets within the RID Interpreter Code of Professional Conduct required;
• RID, Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) Advanced/Level 3, or similar National Certification preferred.
• Passed the written tests for RID or BEI certifications within the past two years preferred.
