Job Description

The Poor People’s Campaign addresses the interlocking evils of systemic racism, poverty, the war economy, and ecological devastation. We are demanding the implementation of our moral agenda, which includes the right to housing, healthcare & PPE, living wage jobs, education, voting rights, an end to police brutality, family separations, and setting up a just immigration system. We call on all people of conscience to engage in deeply moral civic engagement and voting that cares about poor and low-income people, the sick, immigrants, workers, the environment, Deaf people, people with disabilities, First Nations, the LGBTQ community, and peace over war.

Internship responsibilities may include:
-Attending PPC meetings, training, and events
-Organizing and leading committee meetings
-Coordinating and supporting teams working on specialized tasks
-Community outreach and new member recruitment
-Outreach to local, state, and national Deaf, ASL, and interpreting organizations
-Developing ASL content about current issues to make available to the Deaf community
-Developing videos, vlogs, social media content, and other new projects
-Studying and participating in discussions about the history of the PPC, past and present movements, current events, and important issues

Specific assignments are determined in consultation with each intern’s interests and organizational needs. All positions include administrative support tasks, including note-taking, emailing, organizing documents, setting events on Google calendar, and more.
Requirements

Qualifications:
-Ability to work independently and as part of a team
-Good communication skills & ability to follow through on commitments
-Fluency in ASL
-Comfort working with people of all races, genders, ethnicities, religions, sexual orientations, abilities, and ages
-Interest in joining a movement to confront systemic racism, poverty, the war economy, and ecological devastation

We are looking for interns with a variety of skills, including video editing, public speaking, leadership, social media, organizing, community outreach, databases, and social justice, and anything you can bring to the table! In your application, please emphasize your strengths so we can envision your role in the DPPC and match internship work with your skills.

More Details:
-Interns are required to work an average of 10 hours per week. This includes approximately 3 hours of Zoom meetings in ASL, 1 hour of study for political education discussions, 1-2 hours of events or meetings via interpreters or VRS, and 4-5 hours of project/committee work.
-This is an unpaid internship, but an incredible learning and networking opportunity
-If you are seeking to complete an internship requirement and receive credits through your university, we can work with them and adjust hours as needed.
-We ask that you commit to at least a one-semester internship, but preference will be given to applicants who can commit longer, preferably until June 2021.
-You will be supervised by Heather West at the Kairos Center. Heather is a hearing ASL interpreter, and you will work in a team of Deaf/ASL fluent interns. Other Kairos staff do not know ASL.
-All work can be done remotely.
