The student will work with the Fire Ecology Research Scientist to develop and implement an independent research project during the summer within the dates of May 1 to August 30. Projects may relate to the following but other areas of study will be considered:
• Mapping natural community types to better understand their distribution and ecosystem function

• Effects of prescribed fire effects on soil erosion
• Population dynamics of herbaceous plant species in response to fire
• Plant morphological adaptations to fire
• Factors influencing pine recruitment on frequently burned landscapes
• Research syntheses on plant species of special interest
• Data analysis of existing long-term plant ecology and fire ecology datasets
• Development and design of plant field guides and plant morphological sketches to facilitate research

Student researchers will also be expected to help with group activities including conducting prescribed burns and collecting fire behavior measurements. Educational opportunities such as local field tours and field lectures will be provided with ASL interpretation as available.

Applicants should be college students or recent graduates in biology, wildlife, forestry, natural resources, environmental studies/science, statistics, data analysis, or related fields and have an interest in a career in natural resources or data management and analysis. Applicants will be evaluated based on the potential benefit of the experience to his or her career plans and satisfactory references regarding work habits, professionalism, attitude, and physical fitness, as work is sometimes strenuous and conducted in difficult outdoor conditions. Employment will be contingent upon passing a driver’s record background check (no points on driver’s record for the past 3 years) for insurance purposes, although exceptions are sometimes made. We encourage students of varying backgrounds to apply. Deaf and hard-of-hearing applicants are welcome. Applicants must provide an updated resume, 1-2 page cover letter describing the applicant's interest in the position, updated academic transcript, contact information for two or more references, and a photocopy of driver's license for authorization of driving company vehicles.
