Job Title: Groundskeeper/trash Removal

Job Description:
SUMMARY:

Performs maintenance work and improvement projects on all grounds and paved
areas of the University which include the operation of electrically-powered
and gasoline-powered groundskeeping equipment and machines, and the use of
small hand and power tools or equipment in planting, cultivating, and
trimming grounds and landscaping.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Performs installation, maintenance, repair and renovation of landscape
features such as turf, ornamental plants, paving, fences, signage, fountains,
exterior drains, irrigation systems, and other grounds structures.

Cares for and cultivates foliage including planting, fertilizing, weeding,
watering, trimming and pruning.

Performs snow removal and corrects ground hazards caused by inclement
weather.

Maintains records of grounds and landscaping activities, including logs of
areas watered and weed eradication applications.

Collects and removes trash from grounds areas, trash room, dumpsters, parking
lots, loading docks and general campus locations by regularly inspecting
grounds, all drains for debris; raking, sweeping and bagging leaves, and
transporting the trash to designated collection points on a daily basis.

Safely operates light vehicles such as pick-up trucks, tractors, riding
and/or walking behind mowers and portable power tools and equipment such as
chain saws, grass trimmers and snow/leaf blowers, and wearing appropriate
safety items such as goggles, gloves, or other appropriate clothing.

Ensures grounds maintenance equipment are operational by performing routine
cleaning, preventative maintenance and cleaning of tools, equipment and
machines within reasonable capabilities.

Assists with preparation of grounds for internal and external events and for
use by visitors, vendors, and the public as needed by campus operations.

Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with
co-workers and supervisor.

Shows a genuine commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in the
workplace; and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous
learning.

Serves as a mandatory Title IX reporter; and takes annual Title IX training
as part of the compliance effort.

Contributes to the overall success of the campus by performing all other
related duties as assigned.



Requirements:
SPECIFICATIONS:

Required Minimum Qualifications (When the candidate’s resume meets these
qualifications, it will be screened in.)
High school diploma or GED.
Two years of experience in any of the following fields – exterior grounds
maintenance and trash removal or equivalent.
Knowledge of various types of trees, flowers, shrubs and other greenery and
how to maintain them.
Fluency in American Sign Language.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Qualities that will help the incumbent be
more successful in the position.)
Ability to write and follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to work without close supervision.
Physical strength, coordination and stamina sufficient to lift objects to 80
lbs. and operate heavy power equipment.
Ability to work in all types of weather conditions.

Valid driver's license and ability to drive standard shift vehicle.

Ability to work during situations of required overtime including weekends,
holidays, or evenings.

The successful candidate will undergo a background check that must be cleared
prior to working at Gallaudet University.
